Bring the Kids, but Not on Saturday

We’ve got a fun weekend coming up with some family and some not-so-family events on the calendar.  On Friday we hit up the Harvest Cafe in Hudson, as we play a mostly acoustic show for the dinner crowd.  On Saturday we travel to the Blind Pig Pub in Athol for an Anne Boleyn Beheading Celebration.  Your guess is as good as ours as to what that’s all about, but we think it will be a blast.  And then on Sunday afternoon we team up with Pumpkin Head Ted for an all-ages, family-friendly concert at Gallery X in New Bedford.  PHT is a fun, eclectic ensemble that we’re really looking forward to sharing the stage with.

We hope you can join us for one of the shows!

EarthFest

Dear friends,

As a rule we try to avoid online contests and asking our fans to vote for us at some annoying website.  We’re making an exception this time around, because we have a chance to open Radio 92.9′s EarthFest in a couple of weeks.  This music festival will feature national acts like Third Eye Blind and the Spin Doctors, and will attract more than 10,000 fans.

We’ve been chosen as one of 10 local acts to compete for the opening slot.  Please take a moment to vote for us here. You’ll have to create an account to log in, but it’s free and only takes a minute.  If we make it into the top 4 based on votes, then we’ll play in a battle of the bands next week, where the winner will be picked.  We’d much rather decide all of this based just on music and performance, but the voting process is the required next step.

Thanks for all of your support!  Please do take a minute to vote for us at: www.myradio929.com/local929/index.aspx

Hippo Article

The Hippo, New Hampshire’s largest weekly newspaper, just did a nice feature article on us.  Thanks to Michael Witthaus for the kind words and for traveling out to Brattleboro to see us as well.

Check out the full article here.

Going North

We’re traveling north this week, with two shows in New Hampshire and one in Gloucester.  We return to the Barley Pub in Dover, NH on Wednesday and the Pub at Cape Ann Brewing on Friday.  Then on Saturday we hit the Red Parka Pub in Glen, NH for the first time.  Come on out and see us if you’re nearby.

Nashua and Quincy

We head up to Nashua, NH tonight (Friday) to play at a new venue for us: Fody’s Tavern.  It looks like a fun place with lots of live music, so we’re excited to check it out.  Saturday we return to Mari’s Place in Quincy, one of our favorite spots.  Come on out and join the fun!

The Fun Begins

We’re excited to be gigging again after a few weeks off.  Starting this weekend, we’ll be playing almost every weekend until September, all around New England, with lots of new venues on the list.  It looks like a great spring and summer, and we hope to see you at some point along the way.  Check out our Shows page for our full schedule.

We return to Metropolis Wine Bar in Brattleboro tomorrow (Friday), a great little spot that we really enjoyed when we played there back in January.  On Saturday we hit the Rockfish, a new venue for us in Newburyport.  It looks like a great restaurant in a beautiful town.  Let the good times roll!

Metronome Review

We were psyched to learn recently that Metronome magazine named our album, The Gods We Were Before, a top 5 pick for April.  Since they don’t have an online version of their publication, here’s the full review:

The cleverly named Gumbo Diablo do exactly as their namesake would imply: serve up a flaming hot dish of Cajun, roots-rock sounds sure to quench everyone’s musical thirst. Featuring the fine lead vocals of Wendy Kinal, the savvy, upbeat accordion work and keyboard playing of Ken Hiatt, the fluid bass lines of Keith Lewis, and the flawless timekeeping of Dave Langhoff, along with guest guitarists Doug Batchelder and Glen Reilly, Gumbo Diablo deliver spot-on flavors of New Orleans and the breezy Caribbean. Check out the tracks “The Hard Sell,” the Cajun party rave-up “Do the Math,” the electric sway of “Make Me Lose My Mind,” and the accordion-propelled “O Fole Roncou.” Gumbo Diablo may think they’ve fallen from grace, but after one listen to their new CD, The Gods We Were Before, we’re here to tell you their highness is still well intact.

Metronome is doing a feature on us for the May issue–look for it at your local music store!

Happy Mardi Gras!

We’re celebrating Fat Tuesday tonight at a new venue for us: The Pour Farm Tavern in New Bedford.  Should be a great night so we hope you can join us for some Louisiana sounds and celebration!

Salem, Cambridge, Damariscotta

Mardi Gras season kicks off for us this week with three great shows.  We’re in Salem tonight (Thursday) at a new venue for us, The Howling Wolf.  Friday night we’re back to one of our favorite spots, The Plough and Stars in Cambridge.  And then Saturday we head to Maine and The Damariscotta River Grill.  We had a great Mardi Gras show there last year and we’re looking forward to doing it again.  Hope you can join us!

“Irresistibly Appealing”

The rave reviews keep pouring in!  The Noise describes our debut album, The Gods We Were Before, as:

…irresistibly appealing…a refreshing world music stew of life-affirming numbers

“Fun, Edgy, and Inspiring”

Another nice review came in this weekend for our debut album, The Gods We Were Before.  Bill Copeland writes:

Gumbo Diablo have come up with a lively, entertaining sound on their new CD. Roots, Cajun, rock and roll, and the coolest accordion work around combine into something fun, edgy, and inspiring.

Check out the rest of the review here, and check out the album here.

Traveling Weekend

We’re off to two new venues in two new cities for us this weekend.  Metropolis Wine Bar in Brattleboro, VT tonight (Friday), and then Nick’s in Worcester tomorrow (Saturday).  We’re psyched to be on the road again bringing our sounds to the people.  Please join us if you’re in the area!

Gardner on Friday

We’re excited to play a new venue for us this Friday–the Gardner Ale House.  They’ve got great food, beer, and music, and we’re happy to be a part of it.  Please join us if you’re in the area!

What’s a Year-End without a Top Ten List?

Another nice bit of press for our debut album, The Gods We Were Before: our tune The Hard Sell was chosen as a top 10 pick for 2011.  Thanks to Pete Chianca for the kind words.

You can buy The Hard Sell — and all of our other tunes! — at CD Baby.

Last Public Show of 2011

Happy holidays, everyone!  Our last public show of the year is coming up this Wednesday at a new venue for us: The Barley Pub in Dover, NH.  Please come out and help us celebrate the end of one great year and the start of another!

Lowell on Thursday

We’re back this  Thursday at Ole Tapas Restaurant in Lowell.  Great food, sangria, and music–what could be better on a cold mid-December night?  Hope you can join us.

Sweat and Hurricanes – New Review

The Patriot Ledger has a nice review of our debut album, The Gods We Were Before.  Pete Chianca writes:

Can Gumbo Diablo really be from Boston? From the album’s opening accordion kick the band is unabashedly Bayou, rollicking with a groove that reeks of New Orleans sweat and hurricanes (the drink, not the storms).

Read the rest of the review here.   Check out the album here.

Double Header Weekend

We’re in  Somerville and Quincy this weekend at two great venues for live music: Sally O’Brien’s and Mari’s Place.  They should be fun nights with lots of new tunes to share.  Hope you can come out.

Portland Post-Thanksgiving

We’re heading up north this Friday to one of Portland’s best live music venues: Empire Dine and Dance.  We’ve heard great things about this spot and we can’t wait to check it out.  It’s the perfect way to break out of your turkey coma.  Come join us for drinks, dancing, and holiday craziness.

Cambridge Tomorrow

We’re back at the Plough and Stars in Cambridge this Saturday, one of our favorite all-time spots.  Great food, drinks, and vibe.  We’ll be playing songs from our new album, of course, and also some new cumbias and forro tunes.  Hope you can join us!
